Chess Tiger,
a chess engine by Christophe Théron. Chess Tiger and the version dubbed Gambit Tiger^[2] competed the WMCCC 1997, WCCC 1999, WMCCC 2000 (3rd place) and the WMCCC 2001, won three times the French Computer Chess Championship, three times the French Programmers Tournament, two times the Spanish Computer Chess Championships, three times the Dutch Open Computer Chess Championship, and the BELCT 2001. As once mentioned by Christophe, Chess Tiger uses a resource friendly 16x16 board vector attacks approach ^[3].

Chess Tiger is suited to run on various platforms, an UCI compatible PC version is available from Lokasoft^[4] , and Chess Tiger 15 from ChessBase^[5]. Recent versions focus on PDAs, Tablet computers, and Smartphones, such as the free Palm version ^[6] , and the releases for Apple'siPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, all running under Apples iOSMobile operating system^[7], also incorporated in Apple's Chess Pro - with coach^[8].

The unregistered version lets you play games but switches to a weaker level after 22 moves. It will let you save your games, but not load them back (you can still view them using a PC or Mac based chess program).

The unregistered version can be used to learn the chess moves: there is no restriction on the 'teacher mode' option!
WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 15.1 (September 9, 2003)

• ENHANCED VISUAL APPEARANCE: 2 new piece sets have been added (for COLOR handhelds ONLY): Challenger and Challenger2, contributed by Bryan Whitby (thank you Bryan!). Also, icons have been included in some buttons.
• A TIGER vs TIGER MODE: you can ask the computer to continue the game playing against itself. Learn how to win in some difficult positions by watching the computer's optimal strategy when it plays both sides.
• IMPROVED 'NEW GAME' DIALOG: now asks you if you want to play with the white pieces, with the black pieces, if you want to play against a friend or analyze a game.
• A 'DISPLAY ONLY THE SCORE' OPTION: you can ask the program to give a numeric estimation of the position and just that: no best move displayed.
• NO LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF GAMES LISTED: the 'Open game' dialog box can now list an unlimited number of games.
• SUPPORT FOR THE D-PAD ON PALMOS 5 HANDHELDS: the left and right buttons allow to change the current view (board size) and the central button allows to change the pieces' style.
